Introduction to Archaeology

Architecture is not just a functional space. It contains within its form cultural messages to the viewer, which can, therefore be accessed by the archaeologist. 

Here are two doorways. Both can be entered. Do they convey different messages? What would you think if you saw them?

Here two distnct buildings standing side by side. Are there there different messages conveyed when you view them? Doest anything suggest they may have different functions?

Internal Aspects: Internal layouts also convey important information. How might you interpret the building layout below? What can you tell me about the layout and use of the structure?

Note the following plans. How do they differ from the plan above? Can you say anything about their plans and their potential functions?
