The idea of the following exercise is simply to slow your reading down and to focus your attention on the poem as it discloses itself bit by bit. Your impressions, expectations, puzzlements -- your thoughts and feelings, in short -- are relevant to the reading process. Jot them down here as you go. You have nothing to lose.
In this case be assured, as you start, that the poem is a well respected one by a much admired author, so no one is playing a trick on you. And it's only eight short lines, so it will soon be over!
On each page, jot down your reactions (in note form, if you like) in the white space. Use a hard return to break up the lines. When you're ready, press the "Submit" button. Then go on to the next bit and repeat the process.
The poem will be revealed line by line, so there will be eight screens.
